„CIA rollover" (eng. CIA invert) – the philatelic name of the standard US postage stamp (Sc # 1610c) with a printing error (inversion), denomination of one US dollar, issued by the US Postal Service in 1979.DescriptionThis is a brand from the „Americana" series, produced from 1975 to 1981. The one-dollar stamp features a candlestick and candle with a core of herringbone wick, which were used during the colonial period. The stamp was published on July 2, 1979, with one out of 100 stamps issued with an inverted black color, which was printed last, although it occupies most of the stamp. The candlestick and text were turned upside down in to the flame. Found 95 instances of inversion. Her Scott Cat Number: 1610c… It was the first U.S. postage stamp to be issued with a significant design element printed upside down since the appearance of Dag Hammarskjöld’s in 1962.Discovery historyOne sheet of stamps was acquired by a CIA officer who was asked to buy stamps from the post office. The CIA officers involved in this story kept one stamp for themselves, and sold the rest to a philatelic dealer. The government tried to return the stamps, but to no avail, as the stamps were legitimately purchased from the postal clerk in the post office.Philatelic valueIn 2004, this inversion was estimated in the catalogs of stamps at only 15 thousand US dollars, which is of the cost of „Inverted Jenny", although there are approximately the same number of copies of both brands. In the same year, the CIA Rollin 'block was sold for $ 60,000. In September 2006, copies of this stamp were sold on eBay.
